Description of Blanket: Cross, Heart, & Fruit Originally drawn by Alexander Mack Jr. The cross characterizes following Jesus as costly grace because it call us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it cost a {person his or her}life and grace because it gives {person} the only true life. True life is a life of depth; living and moving beyond the surface and norm. Heart represents to give and do and be for Christ wholeheartedly, making sure you put the desire of Jesus before any other. The fruit represents what we are to harvest and who we are to be for they will know Jesus' disciples by our fruits. Continuing the Works of Jesus - Peacefully, Simply, Together As a denomination, the Brethren know that the plain word work suggests elpful service as we strive to make “love visible.” We do this by being peacemakers, knowing “love your neighbor as yourself” and “love your enemies” are truths around which the followers of Jesus gather. Having the “mind of Christ” with the idea f simplicity guiding our decisions so that we may live under HIS Lordship in all things pertaining to life. However, this can only be done as we have a goal of community with ower in mind; that is accountability as well as encouraging one another. As each person commits to Christ and His community rather than to an individualistic self-interested approach. We are the Church of the Brethren. Tunker & Dunker The names Tunker, Dunkers, and Dunkards have been applied to many Brethren sub-groups because of their common practice of immersing or 'dunking' baptismal candidates. This was a derogatory name, yet now is known as an honorary name. Radical Pietist Stressed practice over doctrine, spirit over form, a thorough-going spiritual rebirth of the individual and that religious faith is something to be lived out in service to others. The Brethren were known as radical Pietists because they were extremely skeptical of theological scholasticism and governmental systems. This was because they saw hierarchical corruption in the church.
Stressed the separation of church and state, voluntary church membership by adult (believers') baptism, biblical non-violent resistance, strict church discipline, and separation from worldly corruption. Fruitbearing Jesus reminded us in all that we do we should glorify God. As John 15 tells us, “by this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit , and so prove to be my disciples.” Feetwashing Jesus “took the form of a servant” who came not to be served; but to serve , who gave his life for many; who “girded himself with a towel and began to wash the disciples feet.” We are people who hold this practice in high regard. Peacemaker Jesus said “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called Sons of God.” Peacemaking is a divine work, it is only for those who are spiritually mature in Christ. For peace means reconciliation, and God is the author of peace and of reconciliation. Apostle Paul constantly tells us that we are a minsitry of reconciliation for no one has ever been converted by violence. Triune Baptism Brethren are unique with their baptism as they baptize a candidate 3 times forward. They do this by taking the Greek word “ baptiso ” to see a meaning of immersing more than once. Therefore Brethren go by Mt 28:19- “go… baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…” as well as Phil 2:9-10- “every knee shall bow” which gives the posture of bowing in baptism under the submission of living a life on earth under HIS Lordship. Love Feast The Brethren Love Feast is a conscious imitation of Jesus' Last Supper with His disciples. It begins with foot washing, symbolizing humility and service. They then share a meal, symbolizing fellowship. Finally, they share the bread and cup communion, symbolizing participation in Christ's suffering and death. There may also be as a preliminary time of self-examination. Congregations typically hold Love Feast on Maundy Thursday and again about six months later. Gemeinschaft is a German word that comes from our ancestral roots which means more than just a community. It means a community that can love and be loved with the right meaning of love. A community that will be together on the journey of satisfaction can help you become the image of Christ by prescribing three texts: 2 Tim 3:16, Eph 5:19, & Rom 12:9-18; a community that grows to trust and be able to begin to take off the fig leaves of life that we hide behind so that the light of Christ may shine out for all to see. A community of not letting things go, but confronting problems head on….Salvation that does not lack discipline. Schwarzenau , Germany The founding spot of the Church of the Brethren. In 1708 Alexander Mack founded a fellowship with 8 believers. They are one of eight Brethren groups that trace themselves to that original founding body. Nachfolge the essence of Christianity is expressed in discipleship. Every real calling of Christ is a call to death. Bearing the cross does not bring misery and despair, rather it costs a man his life, yet gives a man the only true life. It means to follow Christ in a modern world beset by a dangerous and criminal government. At its center stands an interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount. |
